Solihull Mayor, Glenis Slater visited the new Lumley Grove World War Two Victory Garden in Chelmsley Wood as part of the 70^th Anniversary VJ Day Commemorations.   The Victory Garden has been created by social enterprise company Gro Organic and the local community to provide an outside space that can be used for growing fruit and vegetables for the residents of North Solihull. As the produce becomes ready to pick it is collected and sorted into bags to be given away to local residents. This ensures that some people who may not normally do so, receive at least some of their ‘5 a day’ quota of fruit and veg.   The Mayor attended the grand opening of the garden as part of a day of fun-filled activities which saw local residents given the opportunity to get into the war time spirit by dressing up in clothing from the period and recreating the iconic “Dig for Victory” posters. Other events on the day included traditional activities such as an egg and spoon race, dancing and a sandbag decorating competition.   Following the event the Mayor said: “I’m delighted to have been able to attend the opening of this lovely garden today. Projects like this are great for the local community as they bring people closer together. I hope residents will make the most of the garden by continuing to grow some fantastic produce”.
